Ductless mini-splits have become an increasingly popular system for heating and cooling in homes. They have gained popularity due to their energy efficiency, flexibility in installation, zoned cooling capabilities, and cost-effectiveness for homes without existing ductwork.
SO WHAT ARE DUCTLESS MINI-SPLITS AND HOW DO THEY WORK?
A Ductless Mini-Split system is a type of air conditioning system that consists of an outdoor compressor unit and one or more indoor air handling units. The system circulates the refrigerant, absorbing heat and humidity from the indoor air, and then releases it outside. Furthermore, you can place the indoor units in a mini-split system in separate rooms. This allows for zoned cooling and heating in separate spaces in your home or building that need climate control.
The indoor unit of the mini-split system is typically installed on an external wall inside the home or building. The indoor unit then has a refrigerant line going from the building to the outdoor compressor unit. The outdoor compressor unit is typically smaller than your traditional central air unit, like the ones shown below.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DUCTLESS MINI-SPLITS AND TRADITIONAL CENTRAL AC UNITS?
Unlike traditional central air systems, ductless mini-splits do not require ductwork to transfer cooled or heated air. Another key difference is that the mini-splits have different indoor units per room that can be controlled. Whereas in a building with a traditional central air unit, you have a single thermostat to control the whole building. This means you’ll be heating a cooling space that isn’t in use.
KEY FEATURES OF MINI-SPLIT SYSTEMS
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Ductless mini-split systems provide targeted cooling and heating. So when a room is not in use, you do not have to cool it.
The mini-split systems offer higher energy efficiency, which can lead to savings in your energy bills. This is because, unlike a traditional system, you can control the temperature per room and not for the whole building.
EASE OF INSTALLATION
Ductless mini-split systems, as the name implies, do not require ductwork. This means a quicker and easier installation of a mini-split system as opposed to a traditional central air system that requires ductwork for the system to work.
ZONED CLIMATE CONTROL
Ductless mini-split systems allow for increased zoned climate control per room versus a traditional central air system. Each room that has the indoor until installed will be able to control how cool or warm they would like the room. For example in the summer months, someone who is always cold can have the AC completely off in their room, whereas someone who is always warm can have a lower temperature with the AC running in their room.
This feature allows you to turn off the indoor unit in areas not in use if you primarily occupy one part of the home or office.
WHY CHOOSE A DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT SYSTEM?
Ductless mini-split systems are popular for their capability to offer personalized comfort control in various areas of a home. This also contributes to substantial energy savings. Overall, ductless mini-splits are a versatile and efficient solution for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures without extensive ductwork. Our Professional Technicians at A&T HVAC & Plumbing can see if a ductless mini-split system is the right fit for your cooling needs based on the space you need to cool and the construction of your home.
