Tips To Lower Your Heating Bill This Winter

Winter is coming and no one enjoys a costly heating bill.

Are you seeing costs that are higher than you’ve anticipated and wondering why? Below are some of the reasons this can happen.

Seasonal changes. Perhaps it goes without saying, but as it gets colder outside, we start turning up the thermostat and our systems are kicking on more often. The bigger the difference in temperature between the inside of your home and the outdoor atmosphere, the more your furnace will work, and the more heating you’ll use.

More Laundry. Maybe you’re trying to keep your home cooler and you’re wearing added layers or utilizing blankets instead. Well, you’re likely washing those items when you may have had lighter laundry loads previously. Did you know running your dryer can increase your heating or electric bill?

Inadequate Insulation. Is your home older? Lacking insulation? If you answered “yes” to either, you may be losing heat through leaking windows or under-door drafts. This will cause your furnace to kick on more frequently and, in turn, increase your bill.

Furnace Woes. Is your furnace system older? If so, it may be less energy efficient and less efficient when it comes to heating in general. It might be time to replace your outdated system. Give an HVAC technician a call for an assessment.

Tips for Lowering Your Bills

Looking for some ways to limit your costs? We have some to get you started!

  • Set your thermostat to a lower temperature. Dropping a few degrees should not make you feel too much of a difference, but it can save you 5 to 10 percent on your heating bills.
  • Invest in a programmable thermostat. This way, you can set your system to only run when people are home instead of heating and cooling an empty home.
  • Add insulation. Be it in your home, or by wearing extra layers! Either can help add warmth at a lower cost in the long run.
  • Have your furnace serviced. This should be an annual maintenance item. Reach out to your HVAC professional to have your system inspected and serviced annually. Before winter is ideal.
